This avenue falls into its own category. It is the most exciting one, where big art festivals happen, where you'll find the most enchanting hotels and theatres. The gilded past might have been enough but we are awoken to what means luxury today by the designer shops, the international hotels and the fine dining that have a place at "Avenida". During the popular hommage to "Santo António", the protector of the city, in June, this is also where each typical neighbourhood comes to celebrate by marching, singing and dancing in a contest. Avenida da Liberdade started out as the Public Sidewalk of Rossio, a public garden like Portugal had never had before. Although it is now the 35th more expensive avenue in the world, at its inception was the desire to create a space where people from all backgrounds could mingle. This was an improvement brought by the reimagining of the city needed after the destruction left by the 1755 Earthquake.

Walk to the Eduardo VII Park for a bit of fresh air and stop at the top for a well-deserved break with a view.

Visit the Casa-Museu Medeiros e Almeida.

Really look at the façades while enjoying a refreshment in one of the kiosks that you can find along the Avenue.
